Vice President of Public Affairs - California

Planned Parenthood Mar Monte (PPMM) is currently seeking a Vice President of Public Affairs - California to be based at our Sacramento Regional Office. In this role, the ideal candidate will be responsible for overall management of California Public Affairs functions including communications, public relations and participates as a member of the PPMM Management Team.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

  • Manages the planning, development and implementation, maintenance, expansion and evaluation of department programs, projects and activities.
  • Manages the selection, training, development, supervision and evaluation of department staff, creating and maintaining a well-functioning, mutually-supportive department team.
  • Ensures effective media relations and communications programs throughout the affiliate's California service area, including uniform messaging.
  • Ensures the development, dissemination and effective adherence to affiliate-wide external and internal communication policies, procedures and objectives.
  • Develops the budget for California Public Affairs functions in consultation with the Chief Financial Officer; administers the board-approved department budget and monitors monthly financial data for necessary adjustments.
  • Ensures the development and maintenance of PPMM's capacity to use electronic communication for effective advocacy.
  • Ensures department adherence to affiliate policies, procedures, objectives and practices.
  • Ensures the development and maintenance of broad community, legislative, coalition and regulatory relations to further affiliate objectives.
  • Ensures the development and accomplishment of annual department objectives in the affiliate operating plan.
  • Ensures effective management of PPMM's contractual arrangement with the Planned Parenthood Advocates Mar Monte.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to perform the duties described above.  A typical means of acquiring those abilities would be:
  • Undergraduate degree, with related graduate degree preferred
  • At least ten years of experience working in a political, lobbying or legislative environment.
  • Experience influencing regulatory processes.
  • Demonstrated experience in media, public and community relations
  • At least five years experience supervising professional staff
  • Excellent public speaking and writing skills
  • Ability to prepare plans, reports and budgets
