Vice President, Federal Government Relations

MS stops people from moving. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society exists to make sure it doesn't. Through our 50 state network of chapters, we help each person address the challenges of living with MS. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society founded in 1946, funds more MS research, provides more services to people with MS, offers more professional education and furthers more advocacy efforts than any other MS organization in the world. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is seeking a candidate for the Vice President, Federal Government Relations position. This position will be working in our Washington, DC office.

The Vice President, Federal Government Relations will direct the National Multiple Sclerosis Society's advocacy work on federal issues of major importance and of significant impact to the MS community. The successful candidate will report directly to the Executive Vice President, Advocacy and will have 3 direct reports.

Primary Responsibilities include:

* Developing, planning, and executing the organization's Federal activism plan. The candidate will provide leadership to all of the organization's departments, chapters, volunteers and the MS Coalition to find and understand the unmet needs of people with MS that relate to the federal government. He/She will influence and shape federal activity that affects people with MS through direct research; by representing the Society in coalitions and at Congressional hearings, receptions and relevant events; meeting with legislators, staff and executive agency personnel; and monitoring resource materials.
* The candidate is also responsible for identifying federal sources of funding for MS biomedical research, particularly from the NIH and DOD. He/She will represent the Society on Capitol Hill, within the federal government and with business and non-profit organizations that share similar goals as those of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
* He/She will be responsible for maintaining the organization's database and provide quarterly reports to Congress. Along with this the person will ensure that the organization is meeting its legal responsibilities to Congress and comply with the IRS requirements.
* He/She is responsible for the developing, planning and executing the annual Public Policy Conference. With the assistance of staff members the VP, Federal Government Relations will identify and secure prominent speakers, organize key policy messaging, lead policy sessions and arrange reception events.
* He/She is responsible for managing the Advocacy department's federal government relations budget. This requires the review of purchases for accuracy and updating budget projections throughout the fiscal year.

Experience/Skills Required:

* Minimum of 5 years of legislative and government relations experience at the federal level and 3 years experience with health and/or disability issues. He/She must have 3 years of supervisory experience.
* Knowledge of federal biomedical research, health, disability and non-profit issues are a must. Experience with issue management and advocacy tactics are required. Excellent networking skills and knowledge of Congressional staff and members will be needed. Knowledge of federal legislative and regulatory processes are essential for this position.
* Excellent oral presentation and writing skills required. The candidate must have exceptional interpersonal skills with Congressional Representatives, clients and professional staff members.
