This position is responsible for formulating, defending and advancing Unum's business interests in the federal public policy arena. Reporting to the VP, External Affairs, this role effectively manages corporate resources to improve and protect profitability, competitiveness, and shareholder value, through favorable legislative and regulatory outcomes -- at the national level, in the White House and in the federal agencies. It is also charged with building, maintaining, and providing leadership and close working relationships with a wide array of national organizations, including elected officials, regulators, customers, industry and trade associations, governmental agencies and non-profit organizations.
This position will identify and evaluate proposed legislation and regulations, assessing impact and creating responses, including drafting legislative language. Developing Unum's position on priority public policy issues (i.e. employee benefits, long term care, disability and tax issues) is a critical component of this job. This position requires that you develop technical expertise on primary issues and work as a vital team member, directing Unum's relations with federal government officials.
Qualified candidates will have 7-10 years of combined government relations, Hill experience, and employee benefits industry experience. A graduate or law degree is preferred. Excellent communication skills, with expertise in advocacy writing and knowledge of federal political systems are a must.
