Vice President, Communications & Public Affairs

This position directs the Communications / Public Affairs function for NC State Ports Authority. Develops and executes strategic internal and external communications and provides counsel to senior management and Board members. Enhances and protects the brand, image and reputation, and advocacy efforts of the NC State Ports Authority with key stakeholder groups in the general media, maritime industry, economic development groups, markets, State and Federal government and in the general public. Directs the planning and coordination of the Authorities advertising, promotion and publicity programs as well as tradeshows / conventions / exhibits.

Example of Duties:

· Develop and execute an integrated communications plan to incorporate both internal and external communications.

· Media relations - includes developing and executing a statewide media outreach initiative to establish a positive working relationship and network with senior level media representatives to expand the Authorities public outreach and message. The position will serve as the main point of contact for media representatives and public inquiries. Generate high-level business press and broadcast opportunities and analyst attention.

· Marketing - drive strategic direction of all marketing and communications efforts, including advertising, research, e-marketing and public relations.

· Partner with Ports government affairs team - along with external industry associations, to develop proactive positions and messages on key public policy issues and to communicate those messages to the news media and other critical audiences

· Public Outreach - Develop and implement a program to create statewide awareness of the economic benefits generated through Ports operations, and to build a coalition of supporters among key stakeholders.

· Maintain a communication plan for immediate execution in the event of a crisis of any kind.

· Electronic communications includes managing appearance and content of Authority's web site, external and internal, production and posting of monthly external newsletter, and weekly internal newsletter.

· Responsible for conveying Ports brand and image in communications products across all functional areas.

· Hires, trains, mentors, coaches and evaluates performance of all direct reports and external vendors

· Actively participates as a member of the Senior Management Team

Job Requirements
Master degree preferred in Communications or related field, plus 10 years experience in communications / public relations field required. Requires knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques / methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media. Must have the ability to communicate effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience and to verbally communicate information and ideas to ensure recipient understanding. This position requires the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. Requires demonstrated ability to lead, direct, and coordinate team efforts. Must be proficient in the use of business software, such as: word processing, spreadsheet, web site and presentation applications. Established professional NC network a plus as is "APR" designation. (www.prsa.org). A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a TWIC security credential are mandatory, significant travel statewide will be routine.
