State Affairs Assistant

The American Society of Anesthesiologists ("ASA") is an educational, research and scientific association of physicians organized to raise and maintain the standards of the medical practice of anesthesiology and improve patient care.

Since its founding in 1905, the Society's achievements have made it an important voice in American Medicine and the foremost advocate for all patients who require anesthesia or relief from pain.

ASA is looking for one full-time State Affairs Assistant to join its Office of Governmental and Legal Affairs, in the Washington, DC location.

Position Summary:

To assist the State Legislative & Regulatory Issues Manager in advancing ASA's state legislative and regulatory agenda. This will be accomplished by monitoring and analyzing state legislation and regulations and communicating its impact on anesthesiology internally (to the membership) and externally (government agencies, medical community, public).

Position Responsibilities:

This position is not static and will be revised as the need of the organization's business evolves.

Major Activity: Assists the State Legislative & Regulatory Issues Manager in the monitoring and & analysis of state legislative and regulations impacting anesthesiology.

Major Activity: Works with the Manager and Director of Congressional and Political Affairs to develop state policy agenda and strategies.

Major Activity: Advance ASA's state legislative and regulatory agenda through written communication, such as bi-monthly submission for ASAPAC's Vital Signs e-newsletter and other publications, as needed.

Major Activity: Develop relationships with the medical community in order to create opportunities for coalition building.

Major Activity: Assist in planning the biannual State Issues Forum and other activities related to ASA's Legislative Conference and Annual Meeting.

Major Activity: Organize and update the soon to be created State Advocacy web page.

Minor Activity: Other duties may be assigned

Education and Training:

Bachelor's degree required, preferably in political science, public policy or related disciplines.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years experience in government affairs or association work.
  • Knowledge of state legislative and regulatory processes.
  • Prior analysis of state legislation and regulations required.
  • Knowledge of state health care issues a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and other productivity focused tools.

Core Competencies:

  • Communicate clearly and consistently (verbal and written).
  • Strong legal and legislative research and writing skills.
  • Good listener and quick study on complex issues.
  • Open to direction, supervision and constructive criticism/feedback.
  • Strong interpersonal, organization and political skills.
  • Strong computer skills to monitor state legislation and regulations, conduct research, preferably utilizing Westlaw (Netscan)

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

Will spend the majority of the workday sitting, computing, and talking. Proofreading of materials for an extended period of time. Required infrequent lifting in the 5 - 15 pounds range. Work may be frequently interrupted. The work environment consists of an office environment with light noise. Some travel may be required. OSHA Category III: position whose tasks/duties will not put them at risk for exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials, therefore, universal/standard precautions are not required.
