Mandate

Responsible for leading the communications and public relations efforts for the business banking business unit including media relations, internal communications, issues management and reputation management. Responsible for developing and leading a comprehensive, strategic communications program that includes work with marketing, community relations and key management. Implements strategies and tactics designed to educate and build relationships with the public, the media and key opinion leaders. Provides strategic counsel to and implements solutions for senior management on external communications issues. Ensures consistency of messages through corporate message platform and works collaboratively with the entire communications team. The person in this role, while reporting to the VP of Public Relations, will also work directly with the Vice Chair, Business Banking. The person in this role will serve as a spokesperson for the company and lead crisis teams when needed.

Accountabilities:

Communications Strategy:

Develops and implements a communications strategy that drives greater awareness of the business banking initiatives and services. The strategy should account for competitors in the market, changes in public policy and market dynamics.

Media Outreach:

Develops and implements a much more aggressive media outreach program that results in greater coverage of the company, its leaders and positions Harris as an industry and thought leader. While the number of stories placed and impressions generated will be important, inclusion in trend stories in local and regional publications is highly valued. Serves as a spokesperson for the company.

Strategic Counsel:

Advise executive leadership with options and recommendations for improving communication throughout their organization. During times of crisis, take the lead in terms of generating a plan for action and ensuring that all tactics are carried out as developed as defined in the communications plan.

Innovation:

Generate new and differentiating ideas, in partnership with marketing, to expand Harris' share of voice in the community and drive new business into the company.

Authorities

This role has the authority to represent Harris and its employees to all news media. In addition, this role has the authority to implement all communication tactics once approved by the Vice President of Public Relations

Cross Functional Relationships

This role works closely with marketing, community relations and the leadership of the retail bank to ensure alignment of messaging and strategic approach. This role also works closely with other members of the entire public relations team to share ideas, solve problems and ensure consistency of public relations strategy across all US and Canadian lines of business.

Knowledge and Skills

A BA/BS in journalism, communications or a related area, plus 8-10 years of directly related work experience is required. Significant demonstrated experience in successfully developing and implementing sophisticated media relations strategies in complex industries with a strong preference in financial services. A track record of successfully managing internal and external resources is required along with strong writing and overall communication skills. Ability to comprehend complex financial, legal, regulatory, and strategic issues is also required. The person in this role must have a demonstrated record of implementing process-driven and metrics-driven media programs. Ability to work on tight deadlines and excel in a fast-paced business environment is also a must.
