The nation's largest child advocacy association currently has an opening for a Senior State Advocacy Strategist. Under the broad supervision of the Director of Government Affairs, the individual is responsible for the overall management and implementation of a select state and school district advocacy plan to advance the adoption of the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) and PTA's overall public policy agenda. The Senior State Advocacy Strategist will supervise Regional Advocacy Specialists and District Advocacy Coordinators to effectively implement a state advocacy plan for the prioritization and adoption of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.
Position requires a Bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, education, or children's health, safety, and welfare, or equivalent experience. Master's degree in public policy or J.D. is preferred. Minimum 5 years combined prior experience in the field of education and/or public policy, preferably as a grassroots organizer/campaign organizer within a government relations office in national non-profit organization, with experience in issues related to children's education, health, and welfare. Previous supervisory experience is needed as well as experience with database management and online organizing. Experience working directly with parents, families, and communities in the fields of education or child and family services. Knowledge of public policy, grassroots organizing, education and child advocacy issues is required and familiarity with relevant policy environment is desired. The individual must have experience directing national/or statewide issue based organizing campaigns. An understanding of how federal initiatives are implemented on the state and local level is needed. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and tasks, highly organized, flexible and work in a fast paced and complex environment. Also, the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural, social and political backgrounds is mandatory. Knowledge of best practices in the field of education is essential. Strong oral, writing and editing skills are required and strong interpersonal communication and administrative skills are needed.
