Senior Director, Public Affairs

The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) has an immediate opening for a Senior Director, Public Affairs.  The candidate will direct NEI's public affairs campaign to brand nuclear energy among opinion leaders and extend the campaign to a regional approach supported by the NEI membership. Manage existing public affairs and marketing elements of the NEI communications division, including support of industry public opinion research program, advertising and public affairs strategies that consistently position nuclear energy before decision-makers. Coordinate and integrate the execution of this strategy across NEI divisions and with industry partners. Manage the budgetary and contractor issues associated with the development and execution of these programs.

Assist the senior vice president-communications in the development and execution of broad-based, high-value public affairs and communications programs that support industry policy and regulatory priorities.

Acts as deputy for the senior vice president-communications, including providing guidance and leadership to division staff and acting in the absence of the senior vice president.

Coordinate division development and management of the annual budget and assist in overall coordination of division strategies, programs and activities. Ensure that division objectives and resources are properly aligned and integrated with NEI's business plan.

Job Specifications:
10 to 15 years experience in public relations/marketing field, including management of significant budgets. Extensive experience in communicating about contentious issues and supporting public policy initiatives is necessary. Must have demonstrated ability to manage contractors/ consultants.

  • Exceptional leadership, organizational and motivational skills.
  • Exceptional knowledge and understanding of public affairs strategies and marketing.
  • Organizational skills, including management of contractors and matrixed resources.
  • Strong communications skills-written and oral, including excellent presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills - capable of being persuasive, building consensus and resolving conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to achieve desired results
  • Analytical abilities and a solid sense of judgment.
