The National Urban League Policy Institute (NULPI) seeks a strategic and resourceful Senior Director, Media & External Relations (SDMER) to serve as the communications and media lead for NULPI with responsibility for raising the profile and visibility of the Institute's policy initiatives, research, publications, staff and achievements.
Since 1962, the National Urban League (NUL) has had a formal presence in Washington, DC to ensure that the NUL impacts and influences the Federal government and other stakeholders on Capitol Hill to achieve its goals. Today, the National Urban League Policy Institute advances the NUL's mission of economic empowerment and civil rights through advocacy, research, policy analysis and publications that create a favorable climate for the NUL's programs and positions among policymakers, government officials, the policy community and the public. Through the annual Legislative Policy Conference, reports and studies, and the annual publication of The State of Black America, the Policy Institute provides a foundation from which to advocate on behalf of African Americans and urban communities. You can learn more by visiting the website: http://www.nul.org/
As the country focuses on presidential politics next year, the National Urban League Policy Institute will work to ensure that all issues important to urban communities are included in the debate at all levels: national, state and local. Urban League programs, advocacy and leadership are in tremendous demand as urban residents continue to struggle in the economic downturn. Last year, the Urban League served more than 2.5M Americans providing a critical lifeline. More than a policy think-tank, NULPI is a "do-tank" advancing the profile of the NUL -promoting and influencing legislation or other action that will have a material impact on job creation and economic stimulus, improving access to education, ensuring adequate healthcare and housing and upholding civil rights.
Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President, National Urban League Policy Institute, the SDMER will create and execute a communications strategy for the Policy Institute delivering compelling and targeted messaging to the NUL affiliates and partners, policymakers, funders, the media and public through a variety of mediums including print, online and events. S/he will oversee all NULPI publications and serve as Managing Editor of The State of Black America as well as create new materials that broaden "The State of Black/Urban" brand and its influence. The SDMER will play a significant role in raising funds in support of NULPI and exploring opportunities to diversify revenue streams. Working hand-in-hand with NULPI Senior Vice President and Chief of Staff to direct the activities of the Institute, the SDMER will also manage the office in their absence.
Leading candidates will have demonstrated achievement in devising strategic communications plans, media relations and crisis management, as well as significant experience cultivating successful relationships with the media nationally and on the Hill. S/he ideally is familiar with the Legislative process and federal, state, and local public policy issues, preferably those affecting urban communities and underserved populations. Excellent verbal and written communications skills are required as well as exceptional detail orientation; adeptness in managing to multiple deadlines; and aptitude in writing for a policy and press audience and prospective funders.
