MISSION: READINESS - MILITARY LEADERS FOR KIDS

Excellent opportunity for professional growth, putting your advocacy skills and people-mobilizing experience to work with a great team on behalf of our national security and America's kids.  Seeking a dynamic organizer to engage retired Generals and Admirals for an exciting new organization in Washington, DC.

MISSION: READINESS is the non-profit, non-partisan organization led by senior retired military leaders ensuring continued American security and prosperity into the 21st century by calling for smart investments in the upcoming generation of American children. MISSION: READINESS worked closely last year with the First Lady and both sides of Congress to pass child nutrition legislation that will help get junk food out of schools, and this year we will work to get physical fitness back into schools. We also promote investments in early care and education that are proven to improve graduation rates and reduce future crime rates. MISSION: READINESS has been widely featured on national news outlets ranging from FOX and CNN to NPR, USA Today and the New York Times. MISSION: READINESS is a project of the Council for a Strong America.

Position Summary:

MISSION: READINESS is seeking an organizer/advocate (job title: "Senior Organizer) to help mobilize retired generals and admirals to address the fact that 75% of young Americans today are unable to join the military due to problems with education, crime, or fitness. The primary goals of the position are to (1) Work with the MISSION: READINESS team to create an active presence of retired senior military leaders in key regions across the country; (2) Take active responsibility in multiple states for pursuing policy opportunities and defending against policy threats; this includes mobilizing members, educating policymakers, working with allies, and coordinating press conferences and other media efforts; (3) Coordinate closely with the team on all other national and state-level opportunities.

The Senior Associate will work closely with the National Director and the Deputy Director as well as all other members of the team.

Requirements:
  • Military experience or knowledge of and appreciation for the military community
  • Commitment to making sure all kids get a good start in life
  • Successful track record of recruiting or mobilizing individuals (3+ years) to support a cause
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including experience making presentations in varied settings
  • A thorough understanding of the legislative process
  • Ability and willingness to travel
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to juggle multiple tasks and timelines.

Desirable, but not required: familiarity with research and policies affecting children and youth
