Public Relations Officer

General Purpose
Provide information regarding the University to students, faculty and the public. Carry out facets of public relations efforts to draw public interest and promote awareness of the University's role in education, research and community activity.

Essential Duties
1. Identify information that draws public interest and promotes public awareness of Yale's role as an internationally recognized leader in scientific and medical research. Demonstrate the capacity to understand the significance of this information, and place it before the public in an accessible and compelling form. Develop story ideas, prepare releases or other background materials to implement those stories, and creatively and aggressively pursue placement of media coverage of same. 2. Work with faculty, administrators and staff in the science-related departments and programs throughout the University to further public understanding of their activities. Coordinate with other public relations staff from across the University to achieve that goal through press releases, University publications, faculty resource guides or other mechanisms. 3. Respond to inquiries from the news media, student media, the public or members of the University community. Utilize independent research of background information in the development of effective response strategies, and articulate that response via personal interviews or written responses. 4. Develop and maintain regular contact with media representatives in a manner that enhances the efficacy of media relations. Work with students, faculty and administrators to prepare them for media interviews through review of likely questions and appropriate responses. 5. Plan, prepare and disseminate information concerning the University through newspaper, periodicals and audio-visual communication media; written communications, speeches and personal contact; and press and community relations. 6. Serve as delegate from the University by presenting information at regional and national conferences. 7. Serve as liaison to local, regional and national educational and community-based groups. 8. Design, plan and publicize workshops, seminars and other University programs. 9. Gather, write, edit, design and produce a wide range of material including articles, stories, press releases, brochures, newsletters and handbooks. Oversees typesetting, layout and design functions.

Education & Experience
1. Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Communications or a related field and four years in public relations, journalism, newspaper writing, or editing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Education & Experience
1. Preferred: Knowledge of medicine and science; relevant medicine- and science-related education and/or professional experience; advanced degree; ten years experience.

1. Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work with a wide range of individuals. 2. Superior written and oral communication skills.
