The Global Fund for Children (GFC) seeks to advance the dignity of children and youth around the world. GFC pursues this mission by making small grants to innovative community-based organizations working with many of the world's most vulnerable young people and by harnessing the power of children's books, films, and documentary photography to promote global understanding.
Position Description
The Global Fund for Children is seeking a creative and innovative communications professional to join its busy and expanding team. The public relations manager will develop and implement the organization's public relations outreach efforts. He/she will also lead GFC's social media efforts, developing and implementing a comprehensive strategy to raise GFC's profile in this emerging public arena. This position reports to the vice president of communications.
Duties and Responsibilities
The public relations manager's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Public Relations
- Lead the planning and implementation of strategic media campaigns that raise GFC's profile.
- Build and maintain relationships with reporters, columnists, editorial writers, and news and talk show producers who cover international and national issues relating to children and/or the philanthropy field.
- Plan and write all press materials for GFC, including press releases, news advisories, pitch letters, editorial board memos, notes to press, talking points, and Web content.
- Respond to press inquiries, pitch stories to reporters, and obtain op-ed placements and radio/TV interviews for staff experts.
- Monitor media coverage on children, philanthropy, and other relevant issue areas.
- Maintain media database, build new media lists, and research new media contacts.
Social Media
- Collaborate with the communications team to implement a social media strategy that utilizes social media outreach techniques to increase visibility, membership, and traffic across all GFC platforms.
- Experiment with new and alternative ways to leverage social media activities (marketing R&D).
- Monitor social media tools, trends, and applications and appropriately apply that knowledge to increasing the use of social media at GFC.
- Measure the impact of social media on GFC's overall communications outreach efforts.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
The public relations manager will have the following qualifications, skills, and experience:
- A bachelor's degree in journalism/communications or a related field.
- Two to three years of experience in public relations, social media, or a related field.
- Excellent writing and editing skills. Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style and The AP Stylebook is a plus.
- Excellent verbal communications skills, with an emphasis on persuasiveness.
- A self-starter with excellent organizational and multitasking skills.
- A team player who can work with diverse partners within and outside the organization to produce high-quality products in a timely manner.
- Creativity, ingenuity, doggedness ... a sense of humor.
Compensation
Compensation for this position is between mid forty thousand and low fifty thousand dollar a year, depending upon experience.
