Public Policy Specialist

The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association, a national medical specialty society in the Northwest Chicago suburbs, seeks a highly motivated individual to support its advocacy, policy development, and socioeconomic affairs initiatives.  The individual will monitor state and federal legislative/regulatory policy, analyze and research policy proposals for their impact on the specialty, develop issue briefings and toolkits, and assist with grassroots functions.  Additionally, he or she will prepare materials and reports for dissemination to Society leadership, members, and staff.  This is a highly writing-intensive position.

*Requirements: Minimum 2-3 years relevant communications experience, with demonstrable interest in legislative and regulatory affairs.  Work or internship experience in a not-for-profit professional association is a plus.  Individual must be able to work both autonomously and in a team environment.  Strong oral, written and interpersonal communications skills are crucial, as are critical thinking skills.  Candidate must be able to juggle multiple issues and processes simultaneously with appropriate prioritization and time management skills.  Controversy and disagreement is a normal aspect of work in the legislative and regulatory arenas; the individual must be able to effectively deal with interpersonal conflicts and maintain confidentiality in communications.  Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and internet browsers is required.  Interacts well with all levels of Society leadership, membership and staff.
