Public Policy Associate

The Public Policy Associate is responsible for assisting the Senior Director of Public Policy and Government Relations to develop, implement and advance overall public policy goals and objectives of the National Osteoporosis Foundation.  These aim to decrease the prevalence of osteoporosis, expand access to quality healthcare, improve comprehensive prevention and education about the disease and increase research funding through policy work with the Congress and key government agencies.

Essential Functions

In support of NOF's policy and advocacy work

1.    Monitors, tracks and analyzes federal legislation, policies and programs.
2.    Monitors government documents for relevant meetings and opportunities to develop programs and provide comments.
3.    Researches NOF issues through variety of means, e.g. internet and government contacts.
4.    Manages public health policy and advocacy grants for the National Bone Health Alliance
5.    Develops and distributes public policy materials, such as policy positions and comments, testimony, letters, articles, and legislative alerts.
6.    Manages advocacy website.
7.    Interacts with government officials and coalitions (in Washington, DC) to provide osteoporosis information and NOF policy positions, which includes lobbying, arranging appointments or coordinating event logistics.
8.    Identifies and represents NOF at relevant coalitions, meetings, receptions, etc.
9.    Assists in developing and implementing annual public policy work plan and budget.
10.    Supports Senior Director and others in department, as necessary.

Additional responsibilities

1.    Responds to questions on reimbursement.
2.    Works closely with other departments to foster increased understanding of policy initiatives to ensure appropriation coordination within NOF, and when appropriate, to facilitate and help fundraising opportunities.
3.    Undertakes special projects and performs other duties, as assigned by the  Senior Director.

Education, Knowledge and Skills

1.    Bachelor's degree, preferably in political or social sciences or communications.
2.    A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience in government relations or related function on Capitol Hill or an association or nonprofit agency.
3.    Knowledge of health care issues preferred.  
4.    Excellent oral and written communication skills.
5.    Strong public policy research and analytic skills.
6.    Excellent interpersonal skills.
7.    Proficient knowledge of relevant computer software and internet research.
8.    Strong organizational skills.  
9.    Highly motivated, ability to creatively solve problems and coordinate multiple projects.
10.    Solid work ethic and sound judgment.
11.    Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
