Global Communications and Public Affairs
Calm nerves, clear thoughts, sharp focus - and the ability to keep smiling sincerely as a rush of people simultaneously demand instant satisfaction. Those are a few descriptions of the personalities in the Communications team. And here's one more: unflappable. We live in a fast, dynamic, sometimes hard-hitting world where no two days are ever the same. Our job is to present Google, its products and its positions to audiences that include our users, partners, shareholders, employees and the media. We're strategic thinkers with large doses of creativity, initiative and endless curiosity - not to mention grace and poise. We want to redefine conventional wisdom, not just echo it.

The role:

Public Policy and Government Affairs Manager
You are an experienced UK Public Policy Manager who will advocate Google's
public policy positions to key UK and European policy-makers and advance
Google's open internet and open competition principles. You will engage in
public debate on internet issues, and, through local industry associations and
non-profits, build coalitions and partnerships around relevant policy
issues. Issues may include internet regulation, privacy and data protection,
online content, intellectual property (including copyright, patent and
trademark policy), communications policy and the regulation of internet
networks and technologies. As part of a closely-coordinated European and global
public policy team, you will lead initiatives of central importance to Google's mission and business.

Responsibilities:

* Advocate in an intellectually robust and responsible way Google's public policy positions before the national government, parliament and other policy stakeholders.
* Monitor and analyse developing policy issues and draft regulation; craft integrated policy positions for presentation to Google management and cross-functional groups.
* Engage with trade associations, industry partners, non-profit groups, and other partners to advance common positions and priciples.
* Communicate policy positions to key constituencies and stakeholder groups, including Google users, partners, customers, UK government officials and agencies, policy advocates, the legal community, journalists, experts and opinion leaders, industry organisations and other relevant groups.
* Generally advance Google's mission, defend its values and create new opportunities to make the world a better place.

Requirements:

* Excellent academic credentials, such as a law degree from an internationally-ranked university. Google is also willing to consider outstanding public policy professionals who are not lawyers.
* Extensive direct experience working with or in the various branches, agencies and institutions of the UK government or parliament. First-rate personal, political, analytical, communications and government relations skills.
* A strong ability to integrate public policy with business strategy and corporate development.
* Familiarity with internet technologies and the related policy and regulatory environment.
* Demonstrable leadership, project management, and collaborative teamwork skills.
* Fluent written and spoken English-language; additional languages a plus. A sense of humour and commitment to professionalism and collegiality are also required.
* Ability to work with energy, motivation, determination and a passion for advancing the values of Google and the internet.
