Public Information Officer

The AMA is currently seeking a candidate for the Public Information Officer position in Media Relations located in the AMA Washington, DC office. The candidate will promote AMA programs, policies and initiatives through comprehensive strategic media outreach.  This position will work proactively to secure favorable media placement for AMA and will provide public relations counsel to the AMA for media-related inquiries.  The PIO will use new/social media to promote AMA programs,  policies and initiatives and serve as a liaison with the media by responding to a heavy volume of media contacts regarding AMA issues and policy and will provide strategic communications counsel and message development for key AMA programs and initiatives.  This position will write news releases, backgrounders, talking points, statements, letters to the editor, opinion pieces, blog posts and other material as needed as well as develop and nurture good working relationships with members of the media.

Requirements

To qualify for this position a Bachelor's degree is required along with a minimum of three to five years experience in public relations, communications, journalism or related fields.  A health policy focus preferred.  The candidate must have strong writing skills with a proven ability for news and opinion writing; demonstrated competence in dealing with print, broadcast and social media; the ability to perform in a high performance, team oriented environment; strong interpersonal skills, including relationship building and maintenance skills; the ability to persuade and negotiate in a high visible environment; and demonstrated ability to cope in a high-stress, high-pressure, fast-paced environment and be able to multi-task and meet deadlines.  Occasional travel is required.
