Public Affairs/Community Relations Strategist

Natural Resource Group, LLC (NRG) is seeking a mid-to-Sr. level Public Affairs / Community Relations Strategist with a strategic, client-focused mindset and demonstrated expertise in community relations/communications in the energy industry to join our growing team.  The public affairs realm in our business line is centered on the development of large-scale energy projects - projects that demand strong stakeholder involvement and well developed communication strategies.  Our clients, based throughout the US and Canada, range from companies with full, in-house public affairs (PA) capabilities to a PA staff of one person. So the services our clients are looking for can range from an established set of PA-related tasks to full-blown strategic plan development and management of implementation of all tactics.  The Denver, Colorado based individual will be involved in coordinating, managing and implementing specific public affairs activities. 

The role will involve assisting with the planning and execution of comprehensive public consultation programs on behalf of our clients.  This may include:

  • Overseeing day-to-day aspects of project management and client relations, including: project meeting and conference call participation, budget tracking, monthly report writing, timeline charting, oversight of logistics planning and client invoicing.
  • Working with the client and with internal NRG staff to develop, coordinate and implement broad scale public consultation programs involving stakeholder outreach with landowners, general public, elected officials, media and advocacy groups at all levels.
  • Planning and managing stakeholder consultation efforts to engage stakeholders proactively, create awareness about major project milestones, regulatory activity and public participation opportunities and oversee development of key stakeholder issues management tracking grids to monitor issues as projects unfold.
  • Writing and editing project plans, as well as informational materials (i.e., fact sheets, letters, newsletters, brochures, ad copy, display copy and Web site copy).
  • Participating in research activities including focus groups with identified stakeholder groups. Writing moderator guides and focus group summary documents.
  • Researching project-related issues through media monitoring, Internet research and other industry sources for feasibility studies and as part of the issues management process.
  • Tracking stakeholder communications and issues, including developing reports summarizing key findings and trends as they relate to stakeholder engagement, integrating them into public consultation strategies and tactics, and integrating them into the overall environmental and regulatory team plan.

As part of a growing service area, the role will also involve conducting industry research in support of client projects and business development efforts, assisting in the development of new business proposals and contracts and participating in marketing outreach to obtain new clients.  This position will involve occasional travel, typically 25 percent of the time.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND EDUCATION): 

  • 8-12 years of applicable experience - preferably in a public affairs capacity within the energy industry, public relations or public affairs firm
  • BA/BS degree (communication, public affairs, public relations or journalism field of study preferred)
  • Significant experience with the planning and execution of public consultation programs and relationship-building initiatives
  • Experience writing and editing outreach plans as well as informational materials
  • Experience developing new business proposals and participating in marketing outreach efforts to obtain new clients
  • Independent multi-tasker with impeccable attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; conversant with AP Stylebook
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project
  • Demonstrated ability to serve in a Project Management role
  • Strong ability to organize and prioritize deadline-driven tasks
  • Flexible and adaptive to changing priorities and deadlines
  • High degree of comfort working on multiple projects simultaneously
