Natural Resource Group is seeking a mid-to-senior level Public Affairs Strategist to play a key role in helping us establish a strong presence in the Pacific Northwest serving existing and future clients.  The ideal candidate will possess a strategic, client-focused mindset and demonstrated expertise in public relations, community relations and communications with well-grounded knowledge of the region.  Experience in the energy industry is extremely desirable.  As a company, our primary service areas focus on public affairs and environmental consulting to clients who are engaged in the development or expansion of large-scale energy projects - projects that demand strong stakeholder involvement and well developed communication strategies.  Our clients, based throughout the US and Canada, range from companies with full, in-house public affairs capabilities to a staff of one person. The services our clients are looking for can range from an established set of public affairs-related tasks to full-blown strategic plan development and management of implementation of all tactics.  The individual will be involved in coordinating, managing and implementing specific public affairs, public consultation and stakeholder outreach activities.

The role will involve assisting with the planning and execution of comprehensive public consultation programs on behalf of our clients.  This may include:

  • Working with the client and with internal NRG staff to develop, coordinate and implement broad scale public consultation programs (strategic and tactical) involving stakeholder outreach with landowners, general public, elected officials, media and advocacy groups at all levels.
  • Overseeing day-to-day aspects of project management and client relations, including: project meeting and conference call participation, budget tracking, monthly report writing, timeline charting, oversight of logistics planning and client invoicing.
  • Planning and conducting on-the-ground ongoing outreach to engage identified stakeholders proactively, create awareness about major project milestones, regulatory activity and public participation opportunities. Includes regular local travel.
  • Tracking and recording stakeholder contacts and key issues in stakeholder issues management database.
  • Writing and editing project plans and informational materials (i.e., fact sheets, letters, newsletters, brochures, ad copy, display copy and Web site copy)
  • Managing and coordinating project logistics and working with other team members on project team meetings, training, events, public meetings, open houses and programs.
  • Participating in research activities including focus groups with identified stakeholder groups. Writing moderator guides and focus group summary documents.
  • Researching project or industry-related issues through media monitoring, Internet research and other sources for feasibility studies and as part of the issues management process.
  • Tracking stakeholder communications and issues, including developing reports summarizing key findings and trends as they relate to stakeholder engagement, integrating them into public consultation strategies and tactics, and integrating them into the overall environmental and regulatory team plan.

As part of a growing service area, the role will also involve conducting industry research in support of client projects and business development efforts, assisting in the development of new business proposals and contracts and participating in marketing outreach to obtain new clients.  This position will involve occasional travel, typically 20-25 percent of the time.
