Location: 2 positions available: (1) Los Angeles, CA & (1) St. Louis, MO
Job Summary
The Public Affairs Consultant will support the Public Affairs Lead who works with the state president for external affairs, legislative and regulatory staff of a global telecommunications company, as well as external consultants to assist in creating and executing strategy for attaining key company goals.
Responsibilities
- Assist in coordinating regulatory and legislative strategies.
- Monitor press coverage of telecommunications issues.
- Help to manage all lobby documents, backgrounder pieces and grassroots strategic plans and messaging.
- Maintain and update all documents and other information relevant to the client.
- Assist with developing and implementing grassroots strategies, including helping to draft op-ed pieces, letters to the editor, speeches, Q and A documents, and any other materials required to wage a campaign to influence policymakers.
- Write public affairs advocacy materials.
- Attend and monitor legislative committee hearings and meetings on issues related to client and draft reports for client.
- Track and study the impact of pending legislation.
- Monitor actions and schedules of legislative committees, regulatory boards, and federal/state commissions.
- Monitor current polling data relevant to client interests.
- Coordinate presentation opportunities for client to create public awareness of their issues.
- Manage various administrative tasks, including compiling various data into clear, manageable reports
Requirements and Preferences
- Applicable only in LA role- Fluency in both written and conversational Spanish along with a strong understanding of the Los Angeles regional and political landscape.
- College degree or equivalent preferred.
- 1 - 4 years of experience primarily in one or more of the following areas: campaigns/politics, public policy/affairs, state legislature/Capitol Hill, government agency or other government-related experience, journalism, think tank, strategic communications, or strategic management consulting firm.
- Familiarity with lawmakers and the legislative process. General understanding of governmental and legislative procedures.
- Strong writing skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
- Strong time management and organizational skills; ability to juggle multiple projects.
- Work well under extreme deadlines.
- Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office systems (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
- Experience with and knowledge of online database systems "intelligence portals" (including Factiva, Google, Thomas.gov, Leadership Libraries, OpenSecrets.org, US Census database, US Senate lobbyist database, Media Map, Bacon's Media Source, Hoover's Online, Telicon/bin-clips).
