Policy Coordinator

The National Partnership for Women & Families is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that uses public education and advocacy to promote fairness in the workplace, access to quality health care, and policies that help women and men meet the dual demands of work and family. Founded in 1971 as the Women's Legal Defense Fund, the National Partnership led the advocacy efforts of the coalition that secured passage of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and is a nationally recognized leader on developing and advocating for government policies that address work-family issues. The Partnership works with business, government, unions, nonprofit organizations, and the media to address the concerns of women and families.

Position Summary

The Work and Family Policy Coordinator is a critical member of the Work and Family team. Working with other team members, the Policy Coordinator develops and implements a wide variety of program projects and initiatives that support campaigns around paid sick days, paid family and medical leave, expansion of the FMLA, and other issues that affect working families. This position provides an excellent opportunity to effect change in a critically important area of public policy.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

* Coordinating with state and local campaigns on strategy around legislative action, communications, and public education. This includes building and sustaining relationships with state coalition partners, researchers, and other experts; representing the organization at external events and with coalition partners; providing technical assistance to legislators and advocates; participating in state and federal lobbying efforts as needed;
* Tracking, monitoring, and analyzing developments in work and family research and policy at the national and state level on an ongoing basis, and disseminating materials as needed to allies;
* Researching and analyzing policy proposals and developing fact sheets, reports and other materials on a wide range of work-family issues, with particular emphasis on leave-related legislation and policies;
* Participating in communications strategies through public speaking, direct work with the media, and providing technical assistance in the preparation of op-ed pieces and letters to the editor. This includes developing content for communication tools such as work-family web pages, blog, online community tools, and listservs;
* Planning and conducting outreach to specific communities to educate them about the Partnership's work and engage them in these issues;
* Coordinating responses to requests for information or other technical assistance from the public, media, and policymakers;
* Assisting in relationships with grantors, including drafting proposals and grant reports;
* Overseeing interns and junior program staff, as appropriate; and
* Maintaining and organizing program files, resource/library materials, distribution files, program databases, and other program information systems and providing general support.


Qualifications

Candidates must be highly organized, able to manage multiple projects and deadlines in fast-paced environment, very attentive to detail, and comfortable interpreting and discussing quantitative data. Individuals should also possess excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; be comfortable representing the organization before a variety of stakeholders; and enjoy working in a team-oriented collaborative environment. Candidates must possess knowledge and experience related to workplace, work-family, or related legislative issues. Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in public policy, women's studies, economics, or a related field preferred. Three to five years of legislative or policy experience preferred. Proficiency in MS Office and Internet research required; Access or other database experience preferred; HTML and other web programming skills helpful.
