The American Society of Anesthesiologists ("ASA") is an educational, research and scientific association of physicians organized to raise and maintain the standards of the medical practice of anesthesiology and improve patient care.
Since its founding in 1905, the Society's achievements have made it an important voice in American Medicine and the foremost advocate for all patients who require anesthesia or relief from pain.
ASA is looking for one full-time Pain Medicine Regulatory Lobbyist to join its Office of Governmental and Legal Affairs, in the Washington, DC location.
Position Summary:
The Pain Medicine Regulatory Lobbyist will serve three primary roles:
1) Primary staff representative of and lobbyist for ASA's pain physician members on relevant issues raised by Federal Government Agencies, policymaking bodies and commercial payers.
2) Responsible for monitoring and analyzing federal regulatory issues related to outpatient settings and Ambulatory Surgical Centers (ASCs), often the locations for pain medicine.

Provide
ASA with another regulatory lobbyist, in conjunction with the Assistant
Director Federal Affairs, in representing all ASA members at a variety of
meetings, and thus, helping ASA to promote its overall regulatory advocacy
agenda.
Position Responsibilities:
This position is not static and will be revised as the need of the organization's business evolves.
Major Activity: Primary staff representative of ASA and lobbyist at government and other relevant meetings in order to promote ASA's pain medicine regulatory advocacy agenda.
Major Activity: Assists the Director of Practice Management, Quality and Regulatory Affairs and Executive Vice President, Washington to plan, develop and implement the pain medicine regulatory advocacy agenda.
Major Activity: Analyzes regulatory, quality and practice management-related issues impacting pain medicine physicians and advocates on those issues as appropriate.
Major Activity: Analyzes regulatory, quality and practice management-related issues impacting outpatient settings and ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) and advocates on those issues as appropriate.
Major Activity: Develops and maintains effective working relationships with other pain societies and associations to effectively promote issues of importance to pain medicine physicians.
Major Activity: Serves as the primary contact for pain medicine associations on issues related to regulatory, quality or practice management issues.
Major Activity: Leads the ASA efforts to generate and modify content on the ASA website dedicated to pain medicine physicians.
Major Activity: Researches issues to support ASA's regulatory advocacy agenda as directed.
Minor Activity: Other duties may be assigned
Education and Training:
Bachelors degree required, preferably demonstrating interest in health policy. Graduate degree in health policy, health administration, health systems management, governmental affairs or law a plus.
Work Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of experience preferably in a related organization, e.g., medical association, relevant government agency, physician practice, ASC, hospital, commercial payer or health policy organization.
- Lobbying experience preferred.
- Knowledge of CMS, FDA and DEA regulatory processes.
- Experience researching and analyzing federal regulations and legislation.
- Demonstrated experience and comfortable speaking before large audiences.
- Experience working with physician volunteers and/or medical association is preferred.
Core Competencies:
- Ability to research and assess pain medicine physician concerns in regulatory issues.
- Organize and coordinate multiple competing projects, set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow up on assignments.
- Communicate clearly and consistently (verbal and written).
- Highly-developed interpersonal skills, affinity for networking, and demonstrated high level of confidence and poise with a strong member service orientation.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:
Will spend the majority of the workday sitting, computing, and talking. Proofreading of materials for an extended period of time. Required infrequent lifting in the 5 - 15 pounds range. Work may be frequently interrupted. The work environment consists of an office environment with light noise. OSHA Category III: position whose tasks/duties will not put them at risk for exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials, therefore, universal/standard precautions are not required.
