Online Communications Specialist

 The City of Falls Church is recruiting for a full-time Online Communications Specialist as the lead developer of content, multi media and interactive features for the City’s external and internal online presence including the City web site, the intranet, electronic newsletters, social networking and other new media.

Responsibilities:

  • Writes, edits, and posts text and multi-media content to City web site’s home page and portions of inside (departmental and topical) pages.
  • Gathers, writes, edits and posts text and multi-media content to the City’s intranet home page and some departmental/topical pages.
  • Advises departments on creation of web content and online material.
  • Collaborates with Chief Technology Officer on maintenance, modification and enhancement of web applications.
  • Reviews and assesses City web site statistics, keeping current with emerging web technologies.
  • Designs e-newsletters, photo galleries, brochures, logos, flyers, power point presentations.
  • Gathers news, writes, edits and distributes weekly eFocus citizen newsletter.
  • Designs desktop publishing materials for internal and external audiences.
  • Works with other City staff to plan and implement special event publicity.
  • Updates City’s Facebook page daily or more frequently as needed.
  • Assists Communications Director with media relations including preparation and distribution of news releases.
  • Serves as acting Communications Director in the Director’s absence.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications, marketing, web design/production or related field plus at least 2 years professional experience and writing and editing web online content, preferably in the public sector.
  • Demonstrated experience with HTML, JavaScript, Microsoft Office software programs, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat software programs and others.
  • Demonstrated experience with Content Management Systems and some knowledge of principles, practices of computer programming with emphasis on web development for internet/intranet sites.
  • Experience with designing graphics for web and for print; ability to counsel other staff on occasion regarding web design and content.
  • Broad understanding of and some experience with social networking.
  • Demonstrated success in writing, editing and presentation techniques, experience with writing news releases and media advisories helpful.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; good research and organization skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Must work on site and be available for occasional evening and weekend work and be able to provide communications support during an emergency.

Hours: Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Salary or Salary & Benefits: $50,000 to $70,000, depending on qualification. Comprehensive benefits package included. See www.fallschurchva.gov for additional information.
