Based in Berkeley, CA, the Institute for College Access & Success is a national nonprofit, nonpartisan research and policy organization dedicated to making higher education more available and affordable for people of all backgrounds. The Institute is a widely respected source of expertise on financial aid, student debt and related issues, and is an influential advocate for reform at the federal, state and college levels.
The Position: The Institute seeks an experienced professional to develop and direct national policy and advocacy strategies, oversee federal government relations, and lead key projects and initiatives. This position serves as a senior advisor to the President and will frequently represent the Institute at outside meetings and events. Specific roles and responsibilities include:
• Policy, Advocacy and Government Relations: In consultation with the President, develop goals and strategies for policy change (long- and short-term, grasstops and grassroots); design and direct implementation plans; manage staff associates and outside government relations consultants; build and coordinate effective coalitions; develop and oversee grants and contracts with outside organizations and advisors; identify and respond to emerging policy issues.
• Project Leadership: Manage selected projects and issue areas; lead project teams and supervise assigned staff and outside consultants; conceive, write and/or edit research reports, issue briefs, presentations, and other content.
• Organizational Planning and Strategy: Advise and assist the President in developing plans and goals for major program areas; identify and implement strategies for achieving organizational and programmatic goals.
• Development: Serve as primary or alternate contact for prospective and current funders, as designated by the President. Oversee all relevant proposal development and donor reporting, including drafting and editing letters of inquiry, proposals and reports.
Core Qualifications: Candidates must have at least 10 years of directly relevant experience, including national policy analysis and advocacy, project management, and staff development and management. Must enjoy working in a creative, dynamic environment with multiple tasks and deadlines. Other key qualifications include: strong interest in higher education policy; excellent writing and verbal communication skills; proven analytic abilities; keen attention to detail; and comfort working independently as well as on a team.
