Founded in 1965, Amnesty International of the USA (AIUSA) is the largest
Amnesty section, with 360,000 members, almost half a million on-line activists,
and more than a thousand community and student activist groups.
AIUSA currently offers an exciting leadership opportunity in the Washington, DC
office: Managing Director, Government Relations.
The AIUSA Government Relations (GR) Managing Director is responsible for
overseeing AIUSA's work on, and relations with, the US government. S/he is
responsible for developing strategies to advance human rights issues in US
domestic and foreign policy, leveraging AIUSA's membership activism; carrying
forward our advocacy with the US government through Congressional testimony and
high-level meetings; and managing a team of high level advocates to achieve the
human rights goals of AIUSA's campaigns and other work.
The GR Managing Director will be an accomplished strategist with a
distinguished track record, who can gain access for AIUSA at the highest levels
of the US government, in Congress and the Administration, including the State
Dept and White House; and represent AIUSA with Ambassadors, policymakers,
activists, members, in the media, and with funders. The GR Managing Director
will provide leadership and management to a team of high-level advocates. These
advocates design and implement strategies to achieve the human rights goals of
AIUSA's campaigns and other work by: advocating with Congress and the
Administration; providing testimony and legislative analysis; and helping to
organize large-scale grassroots work with district Congressional offices
through volunteer activists at the local level across the country. The GR
Managing Director is a member of AIUSA's Leadership Team and participates in
integrated organizational planning.
QUALIFICATIONS: Excellent knowledge of US Government and advocacy, with 7 to 10
years of progressively responsible relevant experience and/or similar
experience in a comparable advocacy organization. Proven ability to lead and
manage a fast paced high profile team with a track record of advancing issues
in US domestic and foreign policy. Strong management, communications and
interpersonal skills; experience in international affairs, human rights, or
another advocacy field.
