Position Summary

The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) seeks a Manager of Health Policy and Advocacy who will work with AAHPM membership to disseminate information, enhance knowledge of the policy process, and increase member involvement in advocacy.  The manager will provide support to committees, programs and initiatives related to health care policy and practice and assist in building relationships with outside entities on behalf of a growing field and medical subspecialty. The position reports to the Director of Health Policy and Government Relations.

Responsibilities

  • Ÿ Track and review legislative and regulatory issues pertinent to hospice and palliative medicine, particularly at the state level
  • Ÿ Assist director in managing and interpreting political and policy developments and developing advocacy strategy
  • Ÿ Prepare and disseminate information to members, including via print and electronic newsletters, special calls to action, Web updates, social media, and other resources
  • Ÿ Develop and execute strategies/programs to identify, recruit, train and motivate AAHPM members to serve as AAHPM “key contacts” with policymakers.
  • Ÿ Provide support in the development and implementation of external communications to raise awareness of hospice and palliative medicine among key government audiences
  • Ÿ Work with director and lobbying firm to execute annual fly-in to DC. Assist with coordinating other constituent-based meetings as needed.
  • Ÿ Provide staff support to standing committees and task forces as assigned. Facilitate communication, prepare meeting materials and follow-up documentation, participate in conference calls, and respond to member inquires.
  • Ÿ Cultivate and maintain good working relationships with members.
  • Ÿ Establish and maintain relationships with outside entities as necessary to advance the association’s goal

Qualifications

  • Ÿ Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university, preferably with a political science or public policy emphasis. 
  • Ÿ 3-5 years of experience working for an association, government organization or in government affairs. Prior working experience with medical associations and/or experience working with physician volunteer leaders considered a plus. 
  • Ÿ Understanding of the public policy process. 
  • Ÿ Strong written and oral communication skills required. 
  • Ÿ Attention to detail and follow-through essential. 
  • Ÿ Strong computer skills with software experience in Microsoft Word, Power Point, and Excel. Capwiz software and/or Joomla content management system a plus. 
  • Ÿ Experience with social media 
  • Ÿ Self-starter with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ÿ Capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • Ÿ Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work as part of a team and an 
  • Ÿ Orientation toward customer/member satisfaction. 
  • Ÿ Ability to travel occasionally.
