Manager, State Government Affairs

The American Forest & Paper Association is the national trade association of the forest products industry, representing forest landowners, pulp, paper, paperboard, and wood products manufacturers. Our companies are in the business of producing products essential for everyday life from renewable and recyclable resources that sustain the environment. The forest products industry accounts for approximately 6 percent of the total U.S. manufacturing output and employs more than a million people with an estimated annual payroll exceeding $50 billion.

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Advocate for member interests by managing a portfolio of states for a national trade association.  Ensure coordination of association state lobbying efforts with overall policy goals of association members.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Manager, State Government Affairs, will advocate for member interests in a portfolio of assigned states by tracking, analyzing, and reporting on state legislative activities. Other duties include: managing state contract lobbyists and state grassroots campaigns; writing letters and testimony as well as multiple association member communications; serving on issue teams; liaison to state public policy groups; meeting with state legislators and testifying before state legislative bodies. Work to ensure AF&PA state legislative goals are coordinated with other AF&PA departments and related industry groups.  Develop educational opportunities for state legislators that serve to highlight the industry accomplishments.  Maintain relationships with and coordinate with outside interest groups in coalitions and on shared state legislative goals.

 

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE:

Three to five years trade association or corporate state government affairs or state government experience with thorough understanding of the legislative and advocacy process.  Excellent written and oral communication skills.  High degree of teamwork, organizational and project management skills.  Ability to juggle multiple responsibilities with high quality execution and performance.  Travel required. Proficient knowledge of contemporary communications (Internet, email, etc.) and Microsoft Word.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

College degree required.    Understanding of environment, energy, or other forest product industry issues a plus.
