To fully achieve its mission, AFSP engages in the following Five Core Strategies:
• Funds scientific research
• Offers educational programs for professionals
• Educates the public about mood disorders and suicide prevention
• Promotes policies and legislation that impact suicide and prevention
• Provides programs and resources for survivors of suicide loss and people at risk, and involves them in the work of the Foundation
The Manager of State Advocacy and Grassroots Outreach (MSAGO) will work closely with AFSP/SPAN USA's Senior Director of Public Policy and other staff in developing and establishing a state-level program and grassroots network to support the organization's public policy priorities and legislative agenda, and in maintaining and enhancing AFSP/SPAN USA's advocacy presence in Washington, DC, in states and localities throughout the United States.
Responsibilities
* Manage and support AFSP/SPAN volunteers and staff in regard to state and local policy development and communications;
* Manage day-to-day operations of the AFSP/SPAN Field Advocate program;
* Assisting in the development, management, and delivery of advocacy and grassroots training, technical assistance and education activities;
* Coordinating AFSP/SPAN volunteers participation as Field Advocates;
* Coordinate and collaborate with AFSP Chapter and Field staff;
* Maintain and develop a Field Advocate database;
* Assist in planning, developing and organizing AFSP/SPAN USA Advocacy Forum/Legislative Institute, Friend for Life Event, along with other appropriate events;
* Maximize use of world wide web to develop and support AFSP public policy goals and objectives
* Plan, develop and maximize the use of net roots and other social networking programs to support AFSP public policy goals and objectives;
* Assists in additional responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Director of Public Policy.
The MSAGO will report to the AFSP/SPAN USA Senior Director of Public Policy.
Qualifications
* 2 - 5 years organizing experience in electoral, issue and or legislative campaigns;
* Expertise and knowledge in the use of the world wide web, net roots, social networking and other computer technology;
* Experience in engaging and motivating a large number of volunteers;
* Experience working collaboratively with other organizations;
* Ability to work under pressure and think quickly on your feet;
* Ability to work alone, as well as part of a team;
* Familiarity with and experience with health care issues;
* Excellent organizational, verbal, written, public speaking and interpersonal skills;
* Willingness and ability to travel as necessary.
