DESCRIPTION
The American Diabetes Association is seeking a Manager of Grassroots Advocacy to join the Association's Government Affairs team to help increase awareness of policy issues affecting people with by diabetes and encourage people to become activists on these issues.
The Grassroots Manager plays a critical role in developing strong advocate networks to enhance our legislative and legal advocacy agenda. Working with our State Advocacy Directors and other Government Affairs divisions to, this person creates and implements advocacy campaigns, focusing significant efforts on engaging our online constituency and activating our supporters, and provides support for state and federal lobby days and other advocacy training.
The Grassroots Manager develops content for the Advocate for Change section of diabetes.org, assisting in the production of e-communications vehicles (including online advocacy effort using social media). This position both creates compelling content for use in grassroots campaigns (action alerts, letters to the editor, etc) and manages the tracking of email messaging and recruitment efforts to determine effectiveness.
The Grassroots Manager manages our National Youth Advocate program to further our public policy agenda and to increase involvement among youth. In addition, this position supports the integration of advocacy within the Association's special events and programs.
This position will report to the Associate Director of Grassroots Advocacy and will be based in our National Office in Alexandria, VA.
REQUIREMENTS
* Bachelor's degree required, plus 2-5 years of experience in public policy, e-communications, grassroots activism, and/or a related field
* Experience using online tools for issue advocacy or candidate campaigning (Convio preferred) to produce electronic communications that result in specific actions
* Excellent writing skills and an ability to quickly absorb and analyze information and to simplify complex issues for various audiences
* Highly organized, detail-oriented and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
* Experience or interest in using Web 2.0 tactics to promote advocacy engagement
* Ability to coordinate activities and communications, prioritizing those with the highest potential impact
* Proven ability to work both independently and in close coordination with a team
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office; understanding of content management systems helpful
