The Manager of Communications for the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) Washington Office is the primary staff person responsible for carrying out all external and internal communications on health policy and advocacy issues of concern to organized neurosurgery.  He or she is responsible for writing press releases; letters to the editor; articles for AANS and CNS publications; grassroots updates; and membership alerts.  In addition, he or she assists other Washington Office staff in developing position statements, factsheets, background papers and other collateral materials.  Staff person is expected to develop ongoing relationships with the media and other communications professionals including the national and Washington, DC media -- especially the health trade press -- and the press secretaries and directors of communications of Members of Congress and regulatory offices within the Department of Health and Human Services.  The Manager of Communications also works with other health care organizations and coalitions with whom the AANS and CNS work closely.

Candidate must have a minimum of three to five years of public relations/communications experience.  Must possess an understanding of federal legislative and regulatory process and experience with health care issues is required.  Position requires a proven track record in interacting with national media, trade and science press.  Superior oral and written communication skills are essential.  Good interpersonal skills and personal presentation necessary.  Must be computer literate, with experience in Windows and Microsoft products (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.).  Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree or graduate level coursework in journalism, health policy or a related field desired. Association experience preferred.  Flexibility and willingness to assist, as needed, in all types of assignments essential, given limited size of office staff.
