Legislative Assistant, Federal Affairs

Reporting to the Director of Federal Legislative Affairs, the Legislative Assistant will be responsible for providing grassroots and political program support to the Federal Affairs team. This includes serving as primary liaison for members of the CAP's pathology advocacy network (PathNET), providing direct support to grassroots participants and state pathology societies on federal issues impacting pathology. You will also implement and manage grassroots campaigns to support the CAP's advocacy agenda, working closely with CAP advocacy staff. You will be responsible for program initiatives to help foster relationships between Members of Congress and CAP members and raising the visibility of pathologists on the Hill. In addition, you will track and maintain records of grassroots activities and participate in the drafting of and organization of federal advocacy materials such as action alerts, congressional correspondence and other communications with grassroots members and Congress.

In order to be considered for this position, you must have a bachelor's degree in political science or a related field and at least 3 years of experience with trade associations, government relations, grassroots organization, advocacy or political campaigns. You must have excellent written and oral communications skills, enjoy working with people and be highly organized with the ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment. You must also be able to exercise sound judgment, take initiative, demonstrate high productivity and act on short notice. In addition, it is essential that you have familiarity with the federal legislative and regulatory process and be politically attuned. Advanced Internet research skills are important for success in this role, as you will be involved in conducting legislative research and will assist in tracking federal issues of concern to pathology and laboratory medicine. Proficiency in PowerPoint and Excel are also highly desirable.
