Industry Affairs and Public Policy leader

The Industry Affairs and Public Policy leader has global responsibility for Issues Management, as well as European responsibility for Industry Affairs (trade association management) and Public Policy in Europe.  Given the company's large presence in Europe and Germany in particular, it is important for Styron to have strong participation in industry associations and advocacy activities in Europe, to protect the company's commercial interests and growth opportunities.

Accountabilities

ISSUES MANAGEMENT AND TRADE ASSOCIATIONS:
Lead Issues Management strategy development and implementation to address external issues and public policy opportunities that can affect the company, the businesses, the industry and/or the customer value chain.  
Lead Issues Communications, including updating Styron's position statements, messages and fact sheets related to key product issues such as BPA, styrene monomer, halogenated  flame retardants, product "end-of life" management, green chemistry, renewable raw materials, carbon foot-print, life cycle assessment etc.
Represent Styron on the following European trade associations:  Cefic, Plastics Europe and several other Cefic affiliate associations.  Attend committee and subcommittee meetings as appropriate. Establish relationships with key staff and other member companies; shape direction and strategy at these trade associations to ensure Styron's interests are represented.  Partner with the VP of Public Affairs, who will manage US trade associations:  American Chemistry Council and Plastics Division.

Provide oversight to the trade association management process globally.  Track all trade association membership using the global Tracker spreadsheet. For large trade associations, ensure dues are calculated properly and paid in a timely way.

Provide coaching and strategic direction to senior business leaders engaged in regional trade associations. Provide support and coaching to site leaders when government officials will be visiting.  

With guidance from executive leadership, lead and manage the implementation of public policy/issues management strategies.  Work directly with senior Styron business leaders to ensure alignment, insight and resources for issues management.

SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING:
Coordinate company response to customer requests for sustainability data. Develop and manage process for sustainability reporting for Styron, including evaluation of possible 3rd party suppliers used to collect survey data for customers and suppliers. Lead the process to develop consensus on setting sustainability goals for Styron. Develop recommendations on how to expand the Sustainability/CSR Report for next year, in line with expectations for publicly traded companies. Assess whether the company should sign onto various global initiatives such as the UN Global Compact, the CERES Principles, the Global Reporting Initiative, etc. The incumbent will have accountability to the Styron EH&S/Responsible Care Council for these activities.

Monitor industry and customer trends related to sustainability, analyze how they may affect Styron's businesses and markets, and provide regular insights to business leadership on scenarios. Create and coordinate an annual Sustainability Forum (internal meeting) for Styron business leaders, to continuously educate senior leadership on how public policy and sustainability will affect our business.

Desired Skills & Experience
10-15 years of experience in public policy, issues management, trade association management, or government affairs in Europe. Deep knowledge of policymaking in the EU.  Direct advocacy experience in EU is a plus.
Effective in navigating a complex work environment comprised of networks, coalitions, associations, stakeholders, etc.

Fluent in German and English, spoken and written.
