The American Society of Anesthesiologists (“ASA”) is an educational, research and scientific association of physicians organized to raise and maintain the standards of the medical practice of anesthesiology and improve patient care. 

Since its founding in 1905, the Society's achievements have made it an important voice in American Medicine and the foremost advocate for all patients who require anesthesia or relief from pain.  

ASA is looking for one full-time Grassroots Program Administrator to join its Office of Governmental and Legal Affairs, in the Washington, DC location. 

Position Summary:

To assist with the daily administration and management of the ASA grassroots and key contact program, including providing primary staff assistance to the Committee on Governmental Affairs (CGA), the ASA’s grassroots committee, and leadership in ASA efforts to grow the  Federal grassroots and key contact programs.

Job Responsibilities: 

This position is not static and will be revised as the need of the organization’s business evolves.

1. Major Activity: Create and manage a comprehesive ASA grassroots program and update its database on a continual basis.

2. Major Activity: Assist with the development and distribution of appropriate email messages and action alerts, on both federal and state issues, to targeted members and conduct the necessary email and phone follow up to ensure action was taken.

3. Major Activity: Assist with the administration of the CGA and ensure that committee members have the necessary support that they need to improve and grow the grassroots program in their targeted area.

4. Major Activity: Assist with planning and logistics of outreach efforts to component societies.

5. Major Activity: Assist with the development and disbursement of print or email updates to members of ASA’s grassroots and key contact network.

6. Major Activity: Assist with the management and content on the governmental affairs/grassroots website.

7. Major Activity: Planning and executing the annual ASA Legislative Conference, ASA’s Washington, D.C. fly-in.

8. Minor Activity: Other duties may be assigned

Education & Training:

  • Bachelors degree in the field of political science, communications, information technology or other related studies.

Work Experience:

  • 1 - 2 years of professional experience in an association, governmental or related field, could include a combination of work and professional internships.
  • Strong experience with computers, specifically with utilizing databases.

Core Competencies:

  • Understanding of the political process and how advocacy is conducted in Washington, DC, and the states. 
  • Understanding of healthcare issues affecting physicians and anesthesiologists in particular.
  • Knowledge of and comfort with computers including database and website management.
  • Understanding of what motivates people to act (either through sales, marketing or other related experience).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with an ability to be persuasive and motivate people to act.
  • Ability to write succinctly and to communicate complex information to various audiences in an understandable way.
  • Excellent time-management, organizational and planning skills.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

Will spend the majority of the workday sitting, computing, and talking. Proofreading of materials for an extended period of time. Required infrequent lifting in the 5 – 15 pounds range. Work may be frequently interrupted. The work environment consists of an office environment with light noise. Some travel required. OSHA Category III: position whose tasks/duties will not put them at risk for exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials, therefore, universal/standard precautions are not required.
