The American Veterinary Medical Association is seeking a Government Relations Communications Manager for our Governmental Relations Division (GRD) office located in Washington, D.C. The AVMA's Governmental Relations Division advocates for the Association's policies and positions on federal legislative and regulatory issues that influence animal and human health and advance the veterinary medical profession.
While the position is located in our Washington office and works closely with that staff, it is a direct report to the Communications Director at our Schaumburg, IL headquarters. This key position is responsible for managing the day-to-day communication needs of the GRD, including media relations and managing the AVMA's Congressional Advocacy Network grassroots program. Duties include researching and writing a wide variety of materials for professional and public audiences, including press releases, online content, issue papers, backgrounders, op-eds, speeches, Congressional testimony and other materials as necessary, on tight deadlines. Will also assist in the development, preparation and execution of press conferences and other media events, and ensure website, social media and other multimedia content is relevant, timely and user-friendly.
BS/BA in English, Journalism, or a related field with a minimum of 3 years experience in media relations or public relations including at least 1 year of management experience is required. Previous experience working with DC media is also required; Capital Hill experience is a plus. Must have exceptional communications skills and strong writing, editing and proofreading skills, including web writing and oversight experience. Must understand how new media can be used to advance advocacy initiatives. Strong computer skills are expected. Some travel required. Application deadline is 12/16/10.
