Job Title: Government and Public Affairs Assistant

Reports To: Director of Government and Public Affairs
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
SUMMARY: Provides administrative and logistical support to the Government and Public Affairs (GPA) team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES, will include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
GENERAL DUTIES:
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None
QUALIFICATIONS: Familiarity or experience with Capitol Hill, the federal appropriations process, or the governmental department of an association is preferred. Ability to multi-task and set priorities in a flexible manner to address changing needs. Strong written, research, oral, and interpersonal skills, including proven presentation skills. Strong office automation skills (word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software), as well as proven internet research skills. Comfortable in personal interaction with Members of Congress, Congressional staff, coalition members, and SfN VIPs.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree required. Experience on Capitol Hill and familiarity with the federal appropriations process, or the governmental department of an association is preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to speak effectively before highly educated groups and employees of an organization. Excellent oral and written communication skills, good working knowledge of the English language.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Basic math skills required.
REASONING ABILITY: Must show good judgment and logic. Also, must be able to competently handle potentially controversial issues and situations.

- Assist with the writing, proofreading, editing, and compilation of all government and public affairs communications, correspondence and publications, including the monthly advocacy newsletter.
- Support all Government and Public Affairs Department-related events at the Annual Meeting.
- Maintain GPA Web site that tracks federal appropriations process, and legislation, legal matters, and government policy issues pertaining to neuroscience and mental health issues.
- Maintain GPA Web site that pertains to animals in research and other science policy issues.
- Serve as liaison to coalition advocacy groups at meetings and conference calls, as needed.
- Assist with general office administration, including budgeting and expenses.
