Federal Policy Outreach Manager

The area: Public Policy and Government Relations

It's our team's job to inform and educate elected officials, regulators and other policy makers about our approach to the big public policy issues of the day. Technology moves fast, so it's important we spend time working with the people creating laws and rules to help them understand the issues we care about and that affect our users. Google touches a lot of public policy debates, so we are looking for quick-witted, entrepreneurial and intellectually curious people to join the team. To succeed here you'll need to be able to combine creativity with the organizational skills to manage numerous different projects to tight deadlines all at once, as well as enjoy working with a wide range of policy makers. It's never quiet, never boring and things can happen pretty quickly - so you'll need to be a proactive self-starter who also is an enthusiastic team player. We have a healthy appetite for risk, so you'll always be ready to try new ways of doing things.

The role: Federal Policy Outreach Manager

As a Federal Policy Outreach Manager, you will handle our federal public policy team's outreach to industry trade groups, think tanks, advocacy groups and other influential people and organizations. You will work closely with these entities to solicit input and design and communicate Google's public policy positions, with the aim of advancing sound public policy positions for the Internet and its users. Key issue areas will include those relating to privacy, online safety, competition, advertising, intellectual property, open Internet, telecommunications policy and industry best practices. You will be part of a closely-coordinated global policy team, and more particularly part of the US federal team. You will be expected to lead initiatives of central importance to Google's mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with leading trade associations, think tanks, industry partners, advocacy organizations, non-profit groups and other thought leaders and identify opportunities to promote and build support for Google's public policy positions.
  • Help craft Google's positions on some of the most pressing and novel policy issues of our day.
  • Advocate on behalf of Google and the interests of a free and open Internet with policy-makers and opinion leaders.
  • Establish and implement strategies to communicate policy positions to key constituencies across the U.S.

Requirements:

  • BA/BS degree preferred with a strong academic record and first-rate personal, political, analytical, communications, and government-relations skills.
  • Deep understanding and experience working with Internet technologies and the policy environments that surround them.
  • Strong relationships with policy-makers and key leaders of outside organizations in the Internet public policy space.
  • Ability to integrate public policy with business strategy and corporate development.
  • Strong leadership ability with drive and determination to support a free and open Internet.
