Director of State Relations

Qualifications

Law degree with minimum 10 year's experience in state government and legislative affairs or comparable background.  Previous trade association and lobbying background preferred as well as knowledge of the auto industry.  Excellent written and oral communication skills and analytic ability.  Self-motivated with strong strategic planning, organizational and decision-making skills.  Thorough knowledge of legislative, regulatory and political processes.  Extensive knowledge of Microsoft environment and proficiency in the use of on-line databases desirable.  Significant travel required.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Responsible for the development and implementation of state legislative policy positions and strategies, management of the Association's State Relations Group, bi-weekly conference calls, and timely communications to AIAM staff and member companies.
  • Anticipate, monitor, analyze and research state legislative proposals for potential impact on vehicle product design, emissions, equipment, labeling, distribution, sales, warranty and other issues of importance to member companies.
  • Lead and coordinate the development of Association positions on state legislation based on input from member companies, member company lobbyists, AIAM contract lobbyists, other stake-holders and appropriate AIAM staff.
  • Represent AIAM and its members before a wide variety of state governmental bodies and provide formal testimony at legislative hearings.
  • Supervise and support the work of state contract lobbyists and outside consultants.
  • Prepare amendments, bill summaries, letters, testimony, position papers, talking points and other materials for lobbying efforts.
  • Initiate and maintain strong working relationships with state legislative bodies, industry trade groups, strategic allies, public policy and advocacy groups, and other organizations.
  • Ensure alignment of state lobbying initiatives with Federal government affairs positions and activities.
