Director of Government and Public Affairs

 

The Director of Government and Public Affairs will be responsible for the strategic development and management of ASCA's federal and state advocacy efforts.  The position reports to the Executive Director and is based in the Association office in Alexandria, VA.

Responsibilities:

This position includes working with volunteer leaders and senior staff to develop and implement ASCA's government relations strategy; establishing effective relationships with Congress and the Administration, particularly with key lawmakers and their staff; coordinating governmental affairs activities with industry groups; managing a department budget and three full-time staff; overseeing multiple outside government affairs consultants; promoting growth in the association's political action committee; building grassroots support for federal legislative and regulatory objectives; developing and maintaining relationships with other health care groups on issues of mutual interest/concern; coordinating information-sharing with state ASC associations on state legislative and regulatory issues; and working with ASCA communications staff to develop regular reporting of advocacy activities and information with association members.

Requirements:

This position requires a Bachelor's Degree; at least 10 years government affairs experience; a thorough understanding of legislative processes, political action committees and grassroots; a proven track record of advocacy success at the federal level; and current relationships with relevant elected officials and staff.

Additional Qualifications:

The preferred candidate will have previous experience managing lobbyists and consultants; a working knowledge of federal health care policy; excellent writing, presentation and speaking skills; strong communication and interpersonal skills; be a leader and strategic thinker; and have an ability to work both independently and as part of a team to build and maintain internal and external partnerships.
