Director, Federal Affairs

The American Chemistry Council (ACC), a national trade association representing the world's leading chemical and plastics manufacturers, currently has an opportunity for Director for its Federal Affairs Department located in Washington, D.C.  ACC represents its members on public policy issues; coordinates the industry's research and testing programs; and administers Responsible Care®, the industry's environment, health, safety and security performance improvement initiative.  

The principal job responsibilities include performing federal lobbying activities in support of American Chemistry Council's (ACC) advocacy priorities. The position is also responsible for directly lobbying members of Congress and members of their staff, including scheduling and facilitating meetings with legislators, responding to regulatory inquiries and testifying at public hearings.  The position also develops lobbying strategies and tactics in consultation with applicable ACC committees/teams and directly reports to the Vice President, Federal Affairs. 

The position will also have responsibility for lobbying members of Congress and their staff as well as building strategic and long-term relationships; preparing and executing strategies in support of advocacy objectives, responding to member and public inquiries, as well as providing substantive answers and materials, as needed; advocating policies favorable to ACC to members of legislature and other holders of public office, for purposes of persuading them to support ACC positions. In addition the position will be responsible for studying proposed legislation to determine possible effect relative to ACC advocacy priorities; attending and representing ACC at state and national meetings, conferences, fundraisers, and other meetings; and planning and coordinating meetings between ACC members and elected officials to discuss legislative issues as well as proposals and allows officials to respond to membership concerns.

Required qualifications include a Bachelor's Degree political science, communications or related field and at least 7 years' advocacy, government relations or relevant experience; working knowledge of Capitol Hill protocols and processes; strong written and oral communication skills; and the ability to advocate on behalf of organization, including being persuasive and at times aggressive to build and maintain strong relationships. J.D. from an accredited law school and Congressional, energy, environmental, regulatory or legislative experience preferred.
