Director, Department of Federal Affairs

The American Academy of Pediatrics, the nation's leading advocacy organization for children's healthcare, has an excellent opportunity for an advocacy executive to direct and manage our Washington DC office.


Reporting currently to the Executive Director and overseeing a staff of 14, our Director, Department of Federal Affairs will be responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all aspects of federal legislative and regulatory advocacy programs and initiatives. This includes direct oversight for the Department of Federal Affairs and inter-departmental coordination of federal advocacy initiatives, as well as leadership and visibility on AAP-wide advocacy initiatives both within the AAP and with outside groups. This individual will also serve as the AAP representative at official functions in the Washington area and the advocacy advisor for the Public Policy Council and other pediatric/adolescent associations. We require a consummate professional who is highly self-motivated and persuasive with superb diplomatic and communication skills.


The ideal candidate will have a JD, Master's degree or equivalent in health or government related area (MPH or MPA preferred). Exceptional knowledge of the legislative and regulatory process is essential, as well as demonstrated and recognized abilities in the health-care public policy-making arena. We require a minimum of eight years in senior management including direct experience in or knowledge of pediatric legislative activities. Travel and weekend work required.
