Director, Advocacy and Public Policy

Our Washington, DC office has an immediate opening for Director, Advocacy and Public Policy.


Under the supervision of the AVP for Policy & Advocacy, U.S. Programs, the Director, Policy & Advocacy has day-to-day responsibility for raising public dollars to support the division‚s work. S/he will manage state and federal advocacy staff, as well as multiple lobbyists, and implement a strategy for securing funds through state and federal appropriations, competitive grants and other sources. The Director also works closely with the AVP to implement advocacy efforts aimed at addressing rural poverty, early childhood development, literacy, after school programming, obesity prevention and emergency management.


In coordination with the AVP, the Director will develop and maintain relationships and open lines of communication with external like-minded organizations and coalitions to facilitate this work. The mission is to maintain and expand funding for programs through state and federal appropriations through the development of state and federal budget earmarks. This includes developing and maintaining direct and grassroots lobbying strategies.


Required Skills:

Bachelors degree with a minimum of 7 years of advocacy and management experience; Masters degree a plus
Experience creating and implementing multi-pronged state/federal fundraising campaigns
Experience with federal and/or state competitive grants
Experience building, motivating, coaching and mentoring teams to achieve high quality results
A decisive, diplomatic and flexible team player, with the ability to interact effectively with staff, peer organizations, government officials and the public
Clear understanding of issues related to poverty in rural communities in general, and literacy and nutrition specifically, and the ability to convey that understanding in a clear and easily understood way a plus
Strong organizational and management skills
Strong written and verbal communications and analytic skills
Familiarity with federal and state budgeting processes and legislative research and tracking skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Power Point and Access
Willingness to travel
Ability to work cross departmentally and with partner organizations
Able to work under pressure on a number of competing issues
