Deputy Executive Director, Communications and Public Affairs

The Deputy Executive Director of Communications will work with the Executive Director of Communications and the Vice President for Public Affairs to manage the full range of UN Foundation's media, public affairs, constituency building and online outreach. This position's principle responsibility will be the internal coordination of public affairs activities, communications products and events in direct day-to-day management with the foundation's communications directors. The ideal candidate is a motivated, energetic person capable of managing a number of projects - covering a range of diverse issues -- simultaneously.

Working Relationships

The Deputy Director reports to the Executive Director of Communications and Public Affairs.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Manage and support communication directors and internet director to develop strategic communications plans including providing high-level advice and tactical recommendations about how to implement a plan;

Develop tools, resources and processes to help PA and Program staff more effectively fulfill strategic communication goals;

Assist Executive Director of Communications in managing the day-to-day implementation of UN Foundation strategic communications plans including the overall public affairs calendar and communication budgets;

Create communications and outreach plans or other materials for program areas and Foundation leadership including presentations, press releases, talking points, opinion pieces, etc.;

Work with the Public Affairs team and program staff on campaigns to keep branding and messaging consistent on and offline;

Edit and approve documents for public distribution including press releases, talking points, emails, online content, etc;

Assist Senior management team in tracking the success of communications efforts.

Selection Criteria

Proven ability to write for diverse audiences and translate complex initiatives into speeches that effectively communicate the Foundation's core values and goals.

Experience developing and implementing communications strategies on major projects and/or campaigns including a thorough knowledge of media relations strategies and electronic and print media systems.

Knowledge of advertising techniques and familiarity with all aspects of literature, audio-visual, and online production process.

Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, or related field.

Five to eight years of related work experience or a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

Outstanding writing and proofreading skills. Excellent verbal and analytical skills.

Demonstrated capacity to continuously develop knowledge and skills related to use of rapidly changing technology.

Good interpersonal communications and teamwork skills.

Detail-oriented with strong project and time management skills, including ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.

Motivated self-starter with a positive attitude.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary commensurate with experience. Actual salary will depend on qualifications and anticipated contribution to the Foundation.

UNF pays 100% of medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance premiums for its employees and 75% of medical and vision for employees' dependents.

In addition, UNF provides 20 days of paid vacation per year, 12 paid holidays, three personal days per year, an immediately vested 150% matching 403(b) contribution up to a limit of six-percent of employee pay, Metro Pass benefits, and flexible spending accounts for health and dependent care.
