Description: Florida House of Representatives Communications Specialist Office of the Minority Leader

Location: Tallahassee

Job Title: Communications Specialist

General Summary: The communications specialist will partner with the communications director and others to provide public relations and information services for the House Democratic Caucus. The communications specialist will handle various writing and research assignments, and will work with the broadcast and print media. Preference will be given to applicants who are fluent in Spanish.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Researches and analyzes legislative data for the preparation of public information.
  • Assists in planning, preparing, and disseminating newsletters, articles, speeches, fact sheets, and other publications to support public information activities.
  • Provides public relations services for House Democratic Caucus members and staff.
  • Revises, edits, and coordinates the distribution of news releases.
  • Assists in coordinating and conducting workshops and conferences.
  • Researches newspaper articles and monitors radio/television/Internet sites for information of interest to members and staff of the Florida Legislature.
  • Develops radio/television announcements to be narrated by members.
  • Assists in training legislative assistants in matters concerning public relations and constituent services.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of professional experience in news reporting, research, public relations, public information, advertising, marketing, journalism, or mass communications.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university in communications can substitute for one year of the required experience.
  • Professional experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.
  • Preference will be given to those applicants who are fluent in Spanish.

Annual Salary: $35,928 Excellent employee benefits
