Communications Internship

REPORTS TO:         Director of Communications and Communications Manager

General

The intern works in the Communications Department of NPRA, the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association. This is an unpaid internship that gives the intern the opportunity to learn about the operations of a communications office and a trade association, focusing on how NPRA works with the news media and communicates to external audiences. The intern will work daily with the director of communications, communications manager and advocacy coordinator.  

Students are encouraged to obtain academic credit for this internship through their college or university, and will be allowed to leave the office for classes and other organized internship program activities. The NPRA director of communications will provide any evaluations necessary for the intern to receive academic credit.

NPRA is a trade association made up of with more than 450 companies, including virtually all American refiners and petrochemical manufacturers. NPRA members supply consumers with a wide variety of products and services used daily in their homes and businesses. These products include gasoline, diesel fuel, home heating oil, jet fuel, lubricants and the chemicals that serve as "building blocks" in making everything from plastics, to clothing, to medicine to computers.

Basic DUTIES During the Internship

  • 1) Updating and rewriting existing content on the NPRA Web site and writing new content.
  • 2) Assisting with the assembly of daily electronic news clips.
  • 3) Conducting research for speeches, congressional testimony, news releases, op-eds and letters to the editor.
  • 4) Helping to prepare and organize briefing material for the president and executive vice president to prepare them for media interviews.
  • 5) Making contact with internship programs to recruit candidates to fill the position of communications intern after the intern leaves NPRA.
  • 6) Preparing material for a new NPRA newsletter on the Web.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Intern must have completed at least two years of college and be majoring in journalism, communications, public relations, political science or a related discipline. Previous experience in a part-time or summer job, internship or volunteer work required.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and HTML.
  • Must demonstrate high level organization and attention to detail.
