Associate/Specialist, Government Affairs

Description

Entry level position within corporate government affairs with responsibilities for department operations, compliance, tactical planning and general administration.

Accountabilities: 

Government Activity Planning: 25% of time allocation

  • Participate in Public Affairs Counsel meetings / seminars
  • Work with Corp Comm. on mutual responsibilities
  • Assist in logistics / meeting prep for internal Cubist participants for trade associations (BIO,, PhRMA, ASMC, MBC) 
  • Assist in coordinating communications and tactical engagement by Commercial unit.
  • Assist in logistics / meeting prep for internal Cubist participants on various Lobby Days / Fly-ins
  • Assist in logistics / meeting prep for internal Cubist participants and recruited guest speakers in State / Congressional Hearings
  • Coordinate annual GA budget development

Government Affairs Operations and Lobby Compliance Activities: 50% of time allocation

  • File Congressional lobbying and PAC Reports
  • File Commonwealth of Massachusetts lobbying reports
  • Political Action Committee (PAC) Management and Development:
    • Broadening solicitation process
    • Act at PAC BOD Secretary with responsibilities of  preparing and keeping proper records/minutes pertaining to each PAC Board meeting and the decisions made by the PAC Board; scheduling PAC BOD meetings, etc.
  • Work with IT on creating Government Affairs Website by interacting with Corporate Communications which will also include PAC link
  • Attend second tier meetings with Commercial, Legal and Corp Com functional areas
  • Daily review of daily 'beltway' press (Wash Post, National J. Congressional Quarterly) and MA state press (Boston Globe)
  • Assist Manager with annual and course correction Business Planning
  • Attend designated MA State legislative hearings relevant to Cubist issues
  • Develops and maintains relationships with appropriate MA State allied /alliance groups to position company's business growth opportunities within the Public sector and the broader Healthcare system.  
  • Participate in Massachusetts Biotech Council State-focused working groups and policy committees

General Administration: 25% of time allocation

  • Provide administrative support as required for VP, GA
  • Assist with training of Graduate Fellows
  • Assure timely and accurate communications to Contract firms
  • Proof / edit internal and external; government affairs documents

Required Skills and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor's degree or paralegal certification (with minimum of 2 years paralegal experience) required. Masters or Juris Doctor highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical business, principles of business and / or project management highly desirable.  Knowledge of government process desirable
  • 5 years business experience
  • Some managerial experience and budget management desirable.

Work Environment: Office Based; Requires some travel:  3-4 x /yr to DC; seminar travel; some day travel to Boston
