Associate, Public Affairs

Job Summary:

This position provides support to Unilever’s U.S. Government Relations & Public Affairs Department, helping the team achieve its mission of advancing Unilever’s reputation and relationships with key government officials, managing priority corporate issues, and effectively lobbying to influence the outcome of those issues.

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Fulfill the Government Relations & Public Affairs department’s daily administrative needs, including but not limited to bill payment, supply ordering, office equipment maintenance, relationships with landlord and vendors, budget logistics and record keeping.
2. Coordinate the company’s information-gathering and report-filing requirements for compliance with lobbying registration and disclosure laws.
3. Assemble, edit and distribute the department’s monthly internal news publication.
4. Support the company’s North America Issues Management process by 1) Coordinating meetings and activities of the Issues Management Council, and 2) Developing and maintaining an issues management intranet site.
5. Schedule, prepare materials for, and arrange logistics of meetings, plant tours and Washington, D.C., events for Unilever executives with legislators and their staff, agency officials, diplomats, representatives of foreign entities and lobbyists of other companies and trade associations.
6. Support the department’s relationship building programs.

Challenges:
• Develop effective working relationships with headquarters staff while located in a satellite office.
• Interface with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including employees, customers and government officials and staff.
• Handle multiple tasks simultaneously and identify where and how to get needed answers and organize to achieve all assigned projects.
• Manage and prioritize workflow during intense periods of activity. Ability to complete tasks quickly and accurately when dealing with conflicting demands from office staff.
• Manage the voluminous amount of information and requests the office receives.

Scope:
• Interface with high-level government officials and Unilever senior executives in North America, London and Rotterdam.
• Complete core projects and coordinate internal communications for the GR&PA team.
• Organize and execute program logistics for visiting senior Unilever executives.

Key Requirements:

Education
Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience
1-3 years experience in a professional office. Preferred experience in an industry trade association or corporate government relations or congressional office.

Skills

Specific Training
Technical knowledge of office systems, word processing, spreadsheet applications and ability to use the Internet to complete required tasks.

Ability to supervise vendors for office services.

Problem Solving:
Utilize company resources to complete required tasks. Ability to function well in a small office which requires multi-tasking.

Communications:
Strong oral and written communications skills.

Leadership
Takes the lead and has the ability to operate independently while completing position responsibilities. Demonstrates “entrepreneurial spirit.”

Team Commitment
Proven ability to work well with others in small office environment.
