JOB SUMMARY

Develop, plan and implement a public affairs strategic plan to raise the visibility of AACR locally, nationally and internationally. The primary goal of this position is to increase awareness of AACR and its critical role in cancer research through an aggressive external relations program that includes media relations and community outreach to civic and community groups, in addition to other constituencies important to AACR's mission. This effort is designed to augment media relation's focus on scientific information from AACR's meetings and journals.

REPORTS TO Senior Director, Communications and Public Relations

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Communications & Public Relations, this position will be responsible for AACR's public affairs activities, as follows:

  • Creation and implementation of a public affairs plan that raises the visibility of AACR locally, nationally and internationally, augmenting the association's existing media relations and public affairs efforts from scientific meetings and journals. 
  • Identification and writing of press releases about AACR's activities, leadership, members and mission (other than scientific information from its meetings and journals); pitching spot news and feature ideas about these areas to local and national print and electronic media.
  • Promoting and writing press releases about AACR's multiple scientific awards, including major prizes in cancer research, to local, national and international media.
  • Assisting other members of Communications & Public Relations Department and other AACR Departments in the writing and placement of research-related news and features in local, national and international news outlets.
  • Building outreach programs to key civic and community organizations in Philadelphia and other national communities of importance; establishing a database of groups critical to this effort.
  • Developing a national speakers' bureau of AACR leadership, members and staff who would talk to key civic and community groups about cancer research and AACR's critical mission. 
  • Working with the Department of Survivor and Patient Advocacy to identify, write press releases and promote spot news and feature opportunities about issues affecting these constituencies.
  • Working with other AACR external relations departments, including Development, Program Administration and Office of Science Policy and Government Affairs, to write press releases about spot news and feature opportunities affecting their constituencies.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create effective ways to identify opportunities that promote AACR's activities to the general public through press releases, website, print publications and other means.
  • Establish relationships with major community and civic organizations in key geographical areas of interest, including Philadelphia.
  • Build contacts with local, national and international media who would report about AACR's activities, including policies, awards and advocacy programs.
  • Write press releases about newsworthy items to augment scientific press releases from AACR's meetings and journals.
  • Identify and arrange for speakers to give talks about cancer research and AACR to key civic and community groups in Philadelphia and other key communities. 
  • Interface with AACR leadership and management in efforts to promote AACR outreach efforts with civic and community associations, survivor and advocacy groups, potential donors, government leaders and other members of the general public.

EDUCATION & TRAINING

  • Advanced Degree Preferred
  • 7-10 years experience in PR/Media Relations/ Public Affairs
  • University /Corporate or Agency Experience

  • Excellent Understanding of Public Affairs
  • Excellent Written & Verbal Communication Skills
  • Excellent Understanding of the Media Relations function
