Associate Director of Advocacy

The Alzheimer's Association has been a catalyst for a generation of advancements in Alzheimer policy, research and care on behalf of an estimated 5.3 million people with Alzheimer's disease in the United States. Founded in 1980 and headquartered in Chicago, the Alzheimer's Association is the leading advocate for Alzheimer policies that will improve the lives of these millions of Americans and their families.

To enhance and strengthen this work, the Association is recruiting an Associate Director of Advocacy to coordinate successful advocacy campaigns and grassroots activities to ensure success on federal and state policy issues and strengthen the organization.

We seek an individual who has community organizing skills and has effectively led national campaigns. The Associate Director will report to the Director, Advocacy, and is based in the Washington, DC office.

Responsibilities:

  • Train and provide technical assistance to chapters and chapter coalitions and network policy staff in designing state advocacy activities and issue campaigns
  • Develop advocacy materials for use by the Association, including web-based materials.
  • Attend and participate in Association meetings and other related activity
  • Coordinate all grassroots advocacy activities surrounding federal issues

Required: 

  • Undergraduate degree, preferably in public policy, political science, health policy or closely related field.
  • 3-5 years work experience in political campaigns or community organizing
  • Significant experience with grassroots organizing and coalition-building
  • Strong written, oral and interpersonal skills and must be well organized, detail oriented and able to handle a variety of assignments simultaneously.
  • Willingness and ability to work long hours, to travel, and to work weekends on occasion.

Preferred skills:

  • Extensive Knowledge of grassroots advocacy techniques and effective lobbying techniques
  • Thorough knowledge of internet based advocacy techniques
  • Understanding of State and Federal legislative and regulatory processes
  • Strong community organizing/community development and leadership ability, training and group process skills
  • Skills in producing quick turnaround communication (i.e., legislative alerts) on urgent policy issues
