Assistant Vice President for Public Affairs

The University of Virginia invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Vice President of Public Affairs. The Assistant Vice President will play a key leadership role in the Office of Public Affairs, an organization dedicated to promoting institutional priorities and societal contributions, and helping further distinguish the University as a leader in higher education.

The Assistant Vice President (AVP) will have a dual reporting line to the Senior Vice President for Development and Public Affairs and the Associate Vice President for Public Affairs. He/she will work closely with both senior leaders to create clear and consistent messages and to disseminate them with integrated and innovative approaches in order to generate widespread understanding and financial support for the advancement of Thomas Jefferson's vision of a forward-thinking global university.

A majority of the units within the Office of Public Affairs -- Strategic Communications, which comprises Editorial/Design, Audio/ Visual, and Interactive Media/Web Communications; Marketing; and Media Relations -- will report directly to the AVP, who will oversee daily operations. The AVP will act as deputy to the Associate Vice President as appropriate and provide support with crisis management.

The AVP will be responsible for establishing and monitoring staff performance and development goals while promoting a culture of continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.

Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in a related field from an accredited college or University preferred. Bachelor's degree with appropriate experience required.
  • Extensive years of management experience in a large, comprehensive public affairs/communications/news media organization are required.
  • Prior budget management experience is required.
  • Successful record of publications and/or high-visibility media placements required.
  • Experience in the execution of social media strategy, including development and integration.
  • Demonstrated experience in marketing, strategic communications, and crisis management.
  • A strong record of accomplishment in a Research I University is preferred.
  • Proven track record of effectively leading and developing a diverse team.
