Position: Assistant Manager, Government Relations (Grassroots)Reports To: Manager, Government Relations & ChemStewards®

POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for managing the daily activities of SOCMA's grassroots network, SOCMA CONNECT; tracking the status of SOCMA's Legislative Agenda; conducting research on these issues; attending associated meetings and Congressional hearings; assist in drafting of regulatory comments, legislative testimony, issue summaries and notices to SOCMA members. Must maintain a list of key Congressional districts and committees in accordance to the location of network members and maintain the voting records of key Members. Prepare presentations on network activities and articles for newsletter, Chemical Bond Express. Coordinate on the preparation of meeting notices, agendas, minutes and logistics of meetings. Help maintain GR-related member and facility data for database and manage the GR portion of the SOCMA website.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Manage activities in support of SOCMA's SOCMA CONNECT grassroots network, including marketing the network and its activities, including the Congressional Visit program; seeking creative ways to recruit members into the network; managing the network's membership; and providing regular communication with network members.
2. Maintain grassroots tools, including BiPAC tools available through SOCMA's website and Congressional Directories.
3. Serve as lead support in the planning and execution of the annual SOCMA CONNECT Washington Fly-In, including working with SOCMA's Meetings Department to arrange for meeting logistics and scheduling Capitol Hill appointments for participants.
4. Track legislative developments of SOCMA's Legislative Priorities, analyze bills as they are introduced, attend meetings and hearings and obtain witness testimony on proceedings; assist in drafting press releases and newsletter articles on SOCMA's priorities; and help respond to inquiries from Capitol Hill.
5. Responsible for maintaining the accuracy and timeliness of information on the GR portion of SOCMA's website. Includes keeping the status of issues referenced on the site current and working with GR staff to ensure that materials are updated as appropriate.
6. Assist in coordinating network members' participation in Congressional Visit activities as they arise.
7. Manage information in the TIMSS database, including the acquisition and entry of company/facility-specific information. Maintains current data on member companies.
8. Assist in managing the GR Department's subscriptions and publications.
9. Limited travel. Occasional overnight travel may be necessary.
10. Assist in the administration of SOCMA's Advocacy Awards program, including solicitation of nominations, evaluation and approval process, and award preparation and delivery.
11. Work with GR team to draft quarterly GR newsletter (Capitol Connect).
12. Perform other duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong organizational and planning skills, excellent attention to detail and the ability to handle numerous projects and issues under tight deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft PC applications including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation design/layout; Congressional and Internet research.
- Strong oral / written communications skills, including public speaking.
- Strong customer service focus.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Thorough understanding of how the Federal legislative process works.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in analyzing, appraising, evaluating and solving problems of a procedural, organizational, administrative or technical nature.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in government, political science, public policy or business discipline preferred.
- Up to four years professional experience working in government relations, managing a grassroots network, or working on Capitol Hill.
- Familiarity with the operations of the federal government, including Congress and the Executive Branch regulatory agencies.
- Familiarity with working in an association or member service environment is ideal.
