The Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E) has an immediate opening for an Assistant Director for Strategic Outreach.  The Assistant Director for Strategic Outreach is responsible for all communication matters at ARPA-E with a focus on legislative and public affairs.  The Assistant Director for Strategic Outreach leads the development, implementation and daily management of the Agency's internal and external communication strategies; manages public relations; and develops a cohesive vision for ARPA-E's communications strategy that results in raising the profile of the Agency across many different communities.

ARPA-E is seeking an Assistant Director for Strategic Outreach who has a unique mix of journalism, public relations, marketing, new media and technical skills/energy industry knowledge to help develop and implement messaging and an outreach strategy for ARPA-E's high-impact technology development programs.

Activities may include:

  • Developing proposals for, planning, coordinating and implementing a multi-faceted ARPA-E communications strategy which reflects and is consistent with goals and strategies to reach targeted and broad based audiences, and supports and is instrumental in the fulfillment of the ARPA-E mission
  • Promoting ARPA-E programs and projects to the media and a broad cross-section of stakeholders including building support at federal, state, local levels to gain the acceptance and resources necessary to implement ARPA-E programs
  • Managing the daily operations of the ARPA-E strategic outreach staff, including media and legislative liaisons

The Assistant Director for Strategic Outreach will serve full time for an initial term of two to three years at ARPA-E's headquarters in Washington, D.C. and will report to the ARPA-E Deputy Director for Operations, but also coordinates with DOE's Public Affairs and Congressional & Intergovernmental Affairs offices.

Desired Qualifications

  • 10+ years of work experience, including a combination of journalism, public relations, marketing, congressional affairs, new media and technical skills/energy industry knowledge
  • Experience in developing and implementing internal and external communications plans
  • Exceptional written and oral communication abilities
  • Demonstrated interest in energy and energy technologies
  • Advanced degree in a related field is desired
  • Previous managerial experience preferred
  • Diverse experience in the public sector, private sector, and academia is a plus
  • US Citizenship is required
